Question removing rock in your basement

We have a small home with an unfinished basement, we live on the side of a mountain so our basement is just exposed bedrock on a downward slant.
are there any bright ideas how to carve out some of the rock in order to create more sq.ft. where there is just rock now?
lasers, water jets, jack hammers?
cheapest way?
thanx a lot

The best and least expensive way to do this would be to jackhammer the rock yourself.

A friend in a mining town near here purchased an expensive rotary hammer drill and took the winter to do something similar.
He sold the drill when he was done and got over half of what he paid for it.
It came out to be way cheaper than renting.

If you do this it would be a good idea to get some professional advice on the structural aspect of the project.
