There should be absolutely no 'char' or 'burn' marks on any attic rafter....

Charred rafters

Hi there! We just bought a house built around 1875. The home inspector said that there was evidence of a early fire but that there was no structural damage.

We just went up into the attic ourselves yesterday. We discovered, to our joy, that the attic is *huge* and that it will be easy to finish, with lots of places for windows.

But we also found that there was a pretty serious fire at one time, just like the home inspector said. Several rafters are black and charred and the chimney is black as well. The main area of the fire looks to have been at the rear of the house but the entire attic is black with old soot.

We knew part of the house was an addition, but that it was added early on in the history of the house. We are guessing that it was done about the time the fire happened because the addition is on the rear of the house at the point where the fire damage would have occured on the second floor.

Depending upon the age of your home, it is possible that they re-used wood from another building that had a fire at one point. It was not uncommon for people to recycle wood that is still in decent shape to supply the needed materials for a new building.
