basement wall - framing around drain pipe

i have a pvc drain pipe running along the foundation wall in my basement near the ceiling. framing-wise, the easiest thing to do would be to locate the wall 6 or so inches away from the foundation to clear the pipe. the problem with this is its a rather long wall and would make the room that much narrower. is it possible/allowable to locate the wall the typical 1" away from the foundation, go up 7 feet, jog in a few inches, and then back up? or would i have to move the pipe further into the room so that i could frame a straight wall, floor to ceiling, and then frame in pipe with a soffit?

I certainly would not move the pipe. Making a soffitt type space for the pipe would be my choice. I have never heard of a code that prohibits boxing in a pipe unless it would have something to do with the integrity of the wall. Good luck.

tricky framing question (pics included)

hello, I am in the frustrating planning phase of this project and I have done a great deal of research using this website and the comprehensive books by Black and Decker and Tauntons Build like a Pro series. The only problem I am having is that the duct work is adjacent to the south wall of the basement so I am not sure where to fasten the upper base plate. None of my resources cover this and the only solution that I have come up with is to fabricate a half-wall and use some blocking that is attached to the cement to attach the wall. In addition if you look at the pics you can see that the duct work comes out right above the wall and i am not sure how I am going to tackle it. Should I frame one huge soffit that traverses the length of the basement? First Home Purchase; Basement 2/3-way done - no permit

Hello All, As this is my first post, please excuse my ignornace.... I've recently purchased my first home (built 2001), and the basement is "in-progress" of being finished. The framing is all done, electrical run (w/ 50% activated), and one of the two rooms has drywall up and mudded, the smaller room- a bedroom. I live in a small town in Wisconsin, where everyone on my block has finished their basements w/o permits. We asked the sellers about "paperwork" and got no reply...and everyone knows what that means-no permit. I'm hesitant to call up the building dept. when the process is so far along. Would they make me rip out the drywall to check the wiring behind it? So far I've finished up that bedroom and its looking really nice. The basement is walkout and the window is up to code. I'm set to start on the "home theater" next week, drywalling. What kind of scenario am I looking at if I call the building dept now? What consequences could come about by just finishing up the basement on my own? There is also a bathroom to finish down there...could I just wait and call when the rest is done and I'm ready to start on the bathroom? (which is already framed, shower stall is in, plumbing stubbed) Thanks all, I appreciate your input.
