If it's "musty" it's b/c there's too much moisture in there so open up some windows (and use fans if you have 'em) to rid the smell.

...then find what's the cause of all that moisture and correct the problem.

The smell is in the basement?

the solution is very simple...
checkout www.sanidrydehumidifier.com

as DIYaddict said... it's moisture...

by opening the windows and using the fans will get rid of the smell for now... but if you have moisture problem.. it will get smelly AGAIN...

so you might need to look into solving the problem permanently

good luck

I am no pro nor have I ever used a dehumidifer, but doesn't it have a sensor or something? Does it turns off or something once it reaches that setpoint?

Most of the new one's shut off at set point! Buy a chep RH meter 10-25$ and set the dehumidifier to shut down at 50% RH
