Attic rehab

I'm about to purchase a 1909 house with a 4 peak roof with an open attic. Can anyone suggest any resources for ideas for rehabbing an old, open attic?

"Rehabbing an old, open attic?" Could you be more specific? Do you mean to address insulation and ventilation issues? Do you mean an attic conversion?

It is an open 4 peak roof. I want to turn it into a master bedroom or 2 rooms.

Before beginning, you might need to find out what your local building codes require for attic conversions. If your attic meets all the requirements, then you can proceed with drawing up your plans and return to the building inspector for approval and info on building permits and inspections. Building codes vary from area to area.

Attic storage - really stupid question

I know this will sound really stupid, but here goes . . . we have a cape cod home with knee walls. We've had some moisture and ventilation issues with our knee walls and attic area. I've been storing stuff in cardboard boxes (nothing is damp, no silverfish found in knee wall areas) and am thinking of changing to those plastic storage containers (for dust and future bug issues). Might it be too hot in the summer for the plastic containers? Will the plastic containers "sweat". Also, do cardboard containers act as any type of additional insulation, absorbing heat in the summer? Thanks for any insight.Read More

Basement block wall water infiltration

Hello all, I have a basement water issue that is not completely typical. A block wall in my basement adjacent to my garage is leaking heavy amounts of water. I suspect that this is rain runoff from my gravel drive going under the garage slab, I will address the drainage issue later this summer. For other reasons I have chosen to remove a 12 inch wide perimeter of slab around the basement walls. I have completely cleaned out all of the weep holes and am replacing the perimeter drain tile going to my sump. Everything is going well except for the above mentioned wall. After 2 months, the wall is still wet. Last night I finally got mad and just drilled a hole completely through the block just above the footer, water gushed out and the wall today is beginning to dry. The problem is that about 30 lbs of sand has come out also, I assume this is a backfill used under the garage slab. My concerns are; My garaged slab will settle, crack and possible collapse (I can deal with all of this over a wet basement), and the the sand will continue to come through the hole until such time that it plugs the hole and I am back to the same problem of wet walls. I plan to keep the hole opened up until sand stops coming out with the water but not knowing how much is out there, it may never stop. I am open to any and all suggestions. Got any???Read More
