Question

Where do i find out about installing firestops. I have concrete block walls and am using steel studs in my basement. Walls range from 1/4" to 6" from block wall.

The place to start is with your city's building department. Ask what the inspector will expect to see for vertical and horizontal firestops. Normally, horizontal firestops are required at least every 10 feet, between the stud wall and the foundation -- it can be done with wood, drywall, or insulation. Vertical firestops are required along both sides of the stairs, and along the tops of perimeter walls, between your stud wall and the foundation. Firestops are also usually required on a vertical wall wherever a soffit is constructed out from the wall.

Yes, check with your local building departments. It may be that with steel studs, and concrete walls, they may only required insulation. Good Luck
