replace paneling w/ drywall
Is it necessary or preferred to take down wood paneling to install drywall in a basement? There is a good plastic barrier behind the paneling that would have to be replace after demolition and it seems that the paneling could remain with the drywall screwed in over top. I can't think of any problems this would cause in the future.
Also, there is a drop ceiling which will probably remain. Seems like it'd be a pain to trim all those tiles 3/4" and move the outside edge in. Any way to get around this time counsuming problem?
TIA

There shouldn't be a problem with hanging rock over the paneling. You may need to install box extenders for the electrical.
You can butt the drywall up to the drop ceiling. It would be easier to install a moulding to hide the transision than it would be to flat tape and finish it clean.
