Suggestions on boxing in the basement steel beam....

Was wondering if anyone has suggestions on how to box in a basement beam. I have electrical, cable, phone and a hot water copper pipe (For the gas furnace hot water baseboard on the first floor) running along the right side of the beam. I need to box this in but it seems like I only have a few options. 1 was plywood and drywall. I would love to have access to the beam in case the pipe busted or I wanted to add another electrical line, etc. Any suggestions?

Go ahead and build your drywall soffits and box it in.. Before you cover it - run a couple of pieces of romex through it - for future use....

Could you perhaps add a piano hinge in one or more sections of the drywall? Maybe cover the corner of the box (and the hinge) with corner mold...so it's kind of like the overheads on an airplane?

The likelyhood of a pipe bursting inside the soffit is pretty slim. We don't have access panels in other places where pipes are enclosed in a wall. Frame around it and cover it with drywall. If a pipe were to burst, drywall is easy to open and easy to repair.

Okay, Wayne is right, but I'm really kind of liking my own idea!

What a great place to hide the family jewels...or chocolate bars when I'm "on a diet"
