Painting Basement Floor

Hello All,

We would like to paint our basement floor. Our house is a new construction and the basement floor has been cured for 90 days. I went to a home improvement store and picked up some garage epoxy floor paint, as well as the recommended floor primer. I read the directions on the pain and for cleaning it recommended using their etch acid chemical, and some sort of degreaser and rust remover cleaner. My question is, does anyone know if I need to use this cleaner and acid on a new concrete floor where there is no grease or previous paint..etc? CXan I simply wash the floor with water and a brush, wait for it to dry and apply primer and then paint?

Be VERY careful with any chemicals you use on a basement floor that are designed for a garage. Many give off caustic fumes that are dangerous. In a well vented garage it is usually not a problem, but in a basement it can be lethal, and possibly explosive(water heater, etc.). Ventilate the area well with a fan and open windows.

That said, it is unlikely you need any of the cleaning agents, but the floor does need to be etched(dangerous vapors). How was the floor constructed, insulated underneath, etc???
