under floor storm shelter

Hi folks, I'm looking for some sugestions on a project I have. We have a cabin in tornado country and the builder put a storm cellar under the floor in the launrdy room. My problem is the trap door has no hindges and is quite heavy. Maybe 70 pounds. If I am able to get it open in an emergency I will not be able to pull the door back over the access hole. And ideas on hidges and air assist lift pistons? I have back problems so easy is everything. Are there others out there with this type storm cellar or is mine unique?

Replace the door with something easier to handle.

A trap door is very, very bad.

The FEMA standards are well thought out and include a door that opens inward because anything else can be jammed and unopenable if there is damage and/or debris. - that can be a slow death.

Is there a way to go out the side and have an inward opening door?
