Paint color for basement floor
I'm helping my son renovate a house. He wants to paint both the basement walls (concrete block) and the basement floor (concrete) white. Is white a good choice for the floor? I'm inclined to think a darker color would be better because white would show dirt much quicker.
All opinions are welcome.

Personally, i wouldn't do white on the floors. sure, it'll help make it brighter, but it'll be a nightmare to keep clean and thre are lots of great , inexpensive lighting options that will help brighten the room. if you're finishing the basement as additional living area, white tiles would help, then they can be easily cleaned. but if you're just making it a better basement, there are some great epoxy kits for garages that would be perfect for a basement application. i am partial to the light gray floor myself. its all a matter of personal preference, so your son will have to make the decision based on what he wants...

Thanks for your reply. Yes, I also think white would be a nightmare to keep clean. Utimately, the decision is his to make, but I just hate to see him choose a color that's going to be high-maintenance. This house already has some other high maintenance features/characteristics and another one will just add to the burden of upkeep.
Depending on the type of paint, I highly suspect a white floor would even need to be repainted more often than a gray color to keep it looking good. I think white is more likely to show deep-seated soiling or stains that can't simply be scrubbed off; that's where re-painting would be needed.
I might add that we're planning on using a latex paint, not an oil-based paint. Don't like using oil-based paint indoors.

If the floor has never been painted, I'd use a concrete stain instead - less likely to peel and less prep work when it's time to recoat]
If the cinder block have never been painted they should be sealed with drylok first.

thanks for your comments, marksr. I agree with you on both points. Unfortunately, the floor had been previously painted and the walls have also been previously painted.
Drylock might have been a good thing. The basement has dampness issues. We've resolved some of that by attacking the source problem outside; we're not finished with that yet. I believe the cause of the dampness will be substantially eliminated once we complete those modifcations outside.
Any other opinions on the color for the basement floor?

It's always best to resolve moisture issues from the outside
It would be best to determine what type of paint is currently on the floor. Latex paints don't bond well to oil base enamels. if you don't know what type of paint is currently on the floor - this may help

What color to use is mostly a personal choice. Greys have always been the standard but most any color can look nice with the right decor. Personally, I wouldn't use white

Grey, grey,.... all the way...white would be a cleaning and maintenance nightmare.
24 yrs in the Navy taught me they call it "deck grey" for a reason. Probably just couldn't stand to come up with a "deck brown"...would have been just too Army! lol\
Hey...which is correct "gray" or "grey"...??
Awww nevermind...gray is kind of a US thing I guess.
