preventing rodents from entering attic

I have or had mice, squirrel or some other creature in my attic. I have fiberglass screen material which I was told is soft and advised to install galvanized steel hardware cloth. Is my friend correct that animals cannot chew through this hardware cloth? If not, what is the best material to use?

Also, any other information to prevent animals from entering my attic is much appreciated. Do the pestalotors, the thing you plug into an outlet that has a high pitch sound, work?
Thanks,
Karen

P.S. attic

I knew something was in my attic because the Real Kill Mouse Killer placepacks were eaten. Are these the placepacks that when mice eat they get dehydrated and run outside? If not, which product does this? Could something other than mice eaten this?

I look forward to answers and greatly appreciate your advice.

Karen

The hardware cloth is what you want. The rat poison will be eaten by squirrels. I do not recommend the poison because they can wind up dying inside your walls and that stinks real bad. Those plug in devices do not work. The only thing that does work is getting them removed and preventing reentry.
