I live in a home that is 83 years old. I just moved into it last year. It's in pretty good shape but the basement wall has deteriorated along the top portion probably due to years of moisture penetration and poor concrete. I would like to know if anyone has a few suggestions of how I can restore the walls to prevent further deterioration. I was thinking that I could scrape off the loose material with a broom, etch the fresh surface to help make it sticky and then trowel on some fresh concrete. Then I would paint. I have no idea if my suggestions are good ideas or which products to use. I think I mitigated the problem with moisture penetration above by sealing the gap between the house and the concrete path that runs parallel to the basement wall. We had to get a new heat pump and I want to do whatever we can to insure it works to it's full potential. Prior to this unit, our upstairs was incredibly hot compared to our first floor. We figure good insulation would help. We were just on the Owens Corning website and they recommend 15" of insulation. I climbed up into the attic and to my surprise the joists are only 3" high so we only have 3" of insulation! Is this a lost cause? :confused:
