motorless sump pump

just saw this in a magazine. what r your thoughts on this n can u explain how this works? a little confused.

Basepump|The water powered backup sump pump|Use water to pump water!

It's a simple, old system. The house water creates a partial vacuum which then syphons water from the sump pit. The downside is the amount of potable water wasted to create the vacuum. If your electric pump goes down, you must be at home to turn on this system. I think a more sensible investment would be a pump with automatic switching and a backup battery.

These pumps work fine but not as well as an electric pump. They start automatically when the water in the sump reaches a certain level. The battery operated ones are stronger however if your power is out for over a day then you could very well use up all the battery power. Therefore I would go with the water operated one as a back up.

It's called an eductor pump. It works on the Venturi effect. Not an option for homes with a well.

takes 2 gal of municipal wtr to evacuate 1 gal of sump water
