My house was built in 1928. One window well (cinder block walls & cement base) is clogged with mud. I removed all the mud (3in) and all the rocks mixes with mud (6 more inches). I removed the cover at the bottom of the window well and found a mud impacted metal ball that the drain cover was screwed into. The ball seems to be hollow and the area around it is just muddy gravel. I removed as much of this as possible but water still does not drain. Anyone have an idea what is this ball's purpose? And what else i could do.

window well drains are usually gravity & do not use pumps,,, we've installed, cleaned, replaced, & repaired them but never ran into a ' ball ',,, all i can guess is roto-rooter or replace it - could it be a drywell of sorts ? doesn't make much sense to me either but i'm grabbin' at straws,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

sounds like the ball could be a float, that if it wasn't all filled with mud, rock and gravel, the ball would float when there was a large amount of water, and when the water was gone it would close. But that's just a guess.
