Where the sill meets the foundation I have a sandy accumulation which is always present. My home is 35 years old. I'm wondering if this is a sign of a problem or the result of the movement of the building against the foundation wall. Is this unusual?

It is not a common problem. I suspect it is rotten concrete. It is concrete where clean sand was not used.
Not really too much to worry about now. It would take about 75 years for much damage to really occur.

Are you sure this is sand ? sounds like you have a woodborer working on your sill plate
