Loft over garage questions.

Hi all,

I have built a detached garage, and now am about to start working on the loft over it. This is to be office / work space. The roof trusses are gambrel style to make the most space possible.

I am wanting to put up 5 foot knee walls so that I have some vertical wall space for appearance and to install light switches on. Because of the steep pitch of the roof in the lower section there will only be about two and half feet of space on the attic side of the wall.

Is it better to install the insulation between the rafters with a baffle, or to put the insulation between the studs of the knee wall?

Also, I will be strapping the trusses above the knee wall with 1x3s, does the vapor barrier go between the framing and the strapping, or between the strapping and the drywall?

Thanks!

If you didn't install soffit vents, forget about insulation between the rafters. I don't see insulation in the knee wall doing much good.

Yes, soffits are vented - I thought they had to be?

If the knee wall is insulated, then I have conditioned space on one side, and the unconditioned attic space on the other side?

If the soffits are vented, you can insulate the rafters. Install the styrofoam (fan fold) first.
