basement walls

my house was built in 1920. The basement walls are dark grey. Is this concrete, cement, or some other material? I am planning, while I clean out my basement, possible waterproofing or sealer. So I need to figure out porosity(sp) and adhesiveness.

Waterproofing & sealing is done from the outside. The only time something like dry-loc is used, is if there is a small amount of dampness. If water is entering, it's another story.

i also have an old house, 1930. The foundation is block, w/ some sort of plaster that is flaking and falling off. The exposed block looks to be extremely rough and porous. Was thinking about dryloc but didn't know if it would be effective on an old porous foundation.

What to do about cracks in concrete basement floor

I'm in the process of finishing my basement and just pulled up some old carpet that has been down there for at least 30 years. There are numerous cracks in the concrete floor. We have had water seepage in the basement along the walls and are in the process of scheduling with a waterproofing company to install interior drain tile and sump pump. There are a few cracks in the foundation that we could see when the waterproofing guy came out - but the carpet was still down so we didn't know about the cracks in the floor. I'm not sure if any water's been coming up the floor vs. through the walls - based on where we've experienced the water, I would guess it's coming through the walls. What do I do now? Can/Should the waterproofing company handle the floor cracks? Is there something that I can do that would be sufficient? Does anything need to be done at all? (The house is 90 years old.) It appears that some efforts have been made to patch the cracks in the past - but considering how poorly much of the previous work has been done in the house, it's likely that they just smoothed some concrete over it and called it a day. I'm planning on putting carpet down there when the basement is finished and I really don't want to deal with future water problems. I should add that this is a multi-unit home that I'm living in now, but within the next few years, I will likely either keep it as an income property or sell it. (So it doesn't have to be the world most perfect basement...just enough that I won't have any problems and won't be screwing over subsequent owners.) Thanks for your insight!Read More

Replace support posts with wall?

I plan to divide basement into rooms. One wall/room-divider lands underneath the main support beam (which happens to be 3 layers of 2x8's f.y.i.). The beam has four(4) support points over its thirty(30) foot length,with the two(2) center supports being 3 1/2" steel posts. One of the steel posts is rusted and probably doesn't support the beam as it should (f.y.i.). Question: If the new wall is constructed underneath the beam, full length of the beam, will this remedy the weak post?
