Removing basement lolly columns
#1

I'm in the process of finishing my basement and I'm considering the removal of the two inside lolly columns in a single span of about 20 feet. What would remain on one end is a concrete block column and on the other end, another standard lolly column. There are currently three 2x12s sandwiched together supporting 1/3 of a two story colonial house. I believe that I could add a steel plate to both sides of the 2x12s and bolt it all together and make sure it's fully supported by the two ends. I really need the open space for my pool table!! Any thoughts on whether this is realistic? I would not do the work myself, but before I spend time consulting engineers, I'm interested in your opinions and experiences. Thanks!

I cannot be tactful. This idea is 100% nuts. You are risking the total collapse of your entire house!! For a pool table!!
If you really need to remove or move a column, hire a structural engineer to tell you your options. Increasing the strength of the beam is not the only consideration! Even if the beam holds, the supports and footings for those supports might not hold.
Let us know.
(On the other hand, after your house collapses, you can use the insurance money to buy another house with room for a pool table.)

Your idea will not work, but it can be done. You would have to install a 20' web steel joist, 10" deep. This will only cost about $2500, plus installation, plus piers. Now, if you have an opening in your basement to get a 20 steel joist in there, you have a chance.

Thanks for the replies gentlemen. I do have a walk-out basement so I could bring in virtually any size steel beam, however, after hearing your thoughts, I think I'll make a few calls to structural engineers to get an evaluation of this situation! Better safe than sorry I suppose. Thanks again.
