basement tiling
after installing the plumbing for the bathroom, the concrete floor was patched and then a self leveling cement was poured. this doesnt appear to be level and it has cracked since. the bathroom floor is a small area. would using mortar and ditra be the answer...and then tile on top of the ditra?

You should make sure the cracks were caused by something as simple as leveling compound poured too wet, which can be easily corrected. If they are the result more serious events (settlement?), even Ditra may not be enough to overcome future movement.
For non-moving cracks an eighth-inch or less wide, I'd just fill them with the same thinset used to install the Ditra, working the mud into the openings using diagonal, heavy strokes with a rubber float.

Unmodified thinset is fine, and you will also need to use it under the Ditra. If you try modified, or add separate bonding agents to the mix under Ditra it will take forever to dry. Same for setting the tile over Ditra. Only time modified is used with Ditra is when it is set on plywood or OSB subfloors.
