Basement Window Replacement Suggestions?

Hey Guys,

I need some suggestions about replacing the basement windows in my renovation. The old windows are framed into the block foundation. The top of the window framing is adjacent to the sill plate.

I'm wondering if I should just remove the actual window, and install the new window in the previously framed opening, or should I tear it all out and start fresh (which will let me get in a slightly bigger window)?

If I tear it all out, how to I go about finishing on the inside and outside? The inside will be framed wall with sheetrock covering.

All help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Bryan

Two ways to go.......just remove the sash and order vinyl window to fit that opening.

My recommendation: that is a block foundation, correct?? A few good whacks with a maul and chisel and the bottom mortar fill will probably fall out, same for the sides. But first, measure the opening to the block and top sill, the order a window to fit(minus 1/4"). Secure the window thru the sides into the block with tapcons. Caulk around all edges(inside/out) after foaming in the air spaces.

THe foundation is in fact block, with mortar beds on the bottom and the side.

I would like to use a bigger window so it seems removing the sash and surround will be the best option.

Whats the best way to pruchase the custom windows? Big box or local mom and pop? Any suggestions on good brands/specs?

Lastly, when sealing with foam and caulk, this is all thats needed for the outside to make it weathertight? THe current windows have wood sills on the outside, which are probably more decorative...

Thanks,

Bryan

Brands vary around the country. MI makes a fairly good window, but might not be in your area. Vinyl double insulated glass w/Lo-E/argon will run about $150. I prefer a local lumberyard, the people know the products, and most won't steer you wrong. Too often, the folks at big box can't drive, let alone steer.
