cieling tile.... Im a dunce

anyone have any good tricks for pulling and placing cieling tile in TIGHT spaces. Did two drops this weekend in my basement and to save space i hung the center rails higher than they should have been. Now if i ever need to removed tiles i have to dislodge the rear in a row and pull them out one by one. not a huge problem and i already came up with a homemade modifacation for the future but someone said there were some cutting tricks for circumstances like this and was curious if anyone knew some.

Slice them along the seam with a razor knife. You will have to glue new ones in place, but it get the old ones out without damaging the others.

Cover active heating pipes to emit less heat into the room

Hi all, I am renting an apartment in a 3 family house that is 100 years old with a steam radiator system. I rent the first floor and the finished basement. The problem is that one of the bedrooms is in the basement and the heating pipes to the upstairs apartments run through it. It is typically 80 degrees in that room. The other part of the basement is basically unusable because of how hot it is down there. I can't open the windows because it's the basement (and many of the windows are very old and sealed shut, there is one that is new and standard size and I've honestly considered putting in an air conditioner there). I run fans all the time but there's no cooling to be had. They're no match for the heat from the pipes. Is there any inexpensive way to cover the pipes so that they are not radiating heat into the room? I've talked to my landlord but they're not doing anything about it. I don't want to spend a fortune but I feel as if I'm paying rent for space I'm not using and really need and an air conditioner would be expensive. thanks!!!!Read More

Cold Room Nightmare

* I will make this as short as I can. My wife and I moved into our house four years ago. There is a cold room situated underneath the front porch. It was completely drywalled, insulated, and had some old kitchen cabinets inside it. About a year after we moved in, I noticed some water on the bare concrete floor of that room. I decided to investigate, and what I found floored me. There was mould everywhere. The studs that were used had COMPLETELY disintegrated. I have NO idea how that cabinet was still hanging. So I took it all out. I cleaned up as much as I could, and to be honest, I put it to the back of my mind. There were a few items in there being stored. Then my little 1 year old *husky started to develop allergy/ respiratory related problems. We have been trying to get her health normal for quite a while, and then I read that mould can be an irritant for these very symptoms that she is showing. * I decided to peek into my cold room, and was floored AGAIN! There is mould all over the items in there (mostly garbage that I was too lazy to get rid of). The one part of the wall is flaking cement. It appears that water is flowing off of the porch, and into the crack between the wall and the porch slab. It is a HUGE mess, and something that I need to deal with right away. I am even debating pulling out parts of the panelling/insulation in the basement just to make sure there is no mould in there. * My question is, what is the BEST way to deal with this cold room? * We really don't use it. I know I will have to patch up where the water is coming in, and probably open up the vents that the previous owner covered in. * Can I somehow close off that room entirely?
