Crack in basement floor

I have a poured concrete basement.

The original owner said that a crack in the floor was caused during construction. This crack runs the entire length (front to back) of the basement floor. Should this be a cause of concern?

How old is the basement, how wide and is there a height difference between the sides of the crack?

What is the size of the basement?

The basement is 7 years old, built with the house. It is about 1800 sq ft.

You didn't say whether the crack was settling differentially (higher on one side than the other), or whether it was moving or not. Tight cracks up to 1/16" wide are not unusual for the floor size you mentioned, and don't warrant any remedial action unless they're allowing water to get in. Or unless you're a worry-wart.

Old house and foundations vents help

We live in an older home and just recently had a leak and the crawlspace now Stinks due to the kitchen sink pipe bursting. That's in another thread below. My question here is since my son and I have been working under the house I've always wanted to keep the crickets, spiders, mice and possibly snakes from getting under there. Well now that I'm in a working mood I want to cover those foundation vents. I can't for the life of me find a picture of what ours look like to show you. All I can say is they are not square. They look oval shaped, as if they were made into the foundation. They are in sets of threes spaced out all around the house and have nocovers or screening whatsoever. No way to close or open anything,it's just oval shaped holes in sets of three. I want to put some type of mesh screening over those vent holes. I'll have to do this the cheap way as I am limited on funds. Im sure it'll keep out the snakes at least, I get paranoid a lot. So, if I decide to use this how do I get it to stay in place? It'll need to be held into place against a flat concrete foundation. I strongly prefer something easy, and do not want to use concrete nails. is there some type of putty/caulking I can use to smear around the holes from inside the crawlspace and then press this screening into place, and maybe it'll harden as it dries holding the screen in place.Read More

Busted pipe, wet stagnant crawlspace HELP

Starting yesterday I started smelling this stagnant water smell in our living room. I searched the whole house trying to find out where it was coming from. I was just sure we didnt have a leak anywhere, but proved myself wrong. Anyways, we have a crawlspace and its always dry. I went under to look for standing water and found three spots where water was standing. Basically years ago, we had dogs that loved to get under there in the summer to stay cool, and they dug some holes and the water was standing in those holes and it was stagnant. One puddle was right under the A/C Return, the hole was probably about 3 feet wide and 2 inches deep. The rest of the crawlspace was dry, except around the leaky kitchen sink drain pipe. I guess I should add that we did find the leak, it was from the kitchen sink. One of the main drainage pipes (cast iron) has a leak, and it was close to that area with the hole so it just filled it along with two other holes nearby. We have now fixed the leak, scooped out all the water but still wet mud remains. We cannot afford any costly repairs or repairmen. Its just not possible. We are BROKE! And I mean seriously, we'll have to borrow the money from family members to do anything else. Our concern now is the wet mud and the stagnant smell still lingering underneath and in the house. We are not running the A/C at this time cause its just not hot enough. So ive covered the return with a blanket for now to kind of keep the smell out. How long will it take for that area to dry out? What can I do to rush this along? Like I said the leak is fixed, but wet stagnant mud remains. I need a cheap fix seriously. I just want to rush the drying process, use something to absorb the remaining moisture and get rid of the smell. And aside from getting it dry underneath again what other steps should i take for inside the house? Should I was the walls down as well? Ive heard walls will hold the smell. Please help!!!Read More
