which is more economical?

I have some carpentry skills, but not expert,
I have a project to finish my basement this year, my question is which way would be more economical, like money wise: a) I will take care of General Contractor role and Carpentry & plumbing work and hire electician or 2) totally hire GC.
Thanks,

Depends on what your project is. Adding a wall, I doubt a GC would be of help. Total remodel, again, depends on your skill level. I do it for a living and still hire out plumbing.....nasty stuff, plumbing. I don't like water, so roofing and plumbing is out. You will also need to check with your governing authority to see if you can perform this work yourself. Some don't let you do any, some let you do a little, some don't care as long as it passes inspection. You will need to permit any work you do, so be ready with plans to present to the authority.

Keep in mind the money question can be deceiving - I know a guy who was his own GC in building his house and he figured he saved $30 K. The problem was the time it took him away from his regular job ended up costing him $100 K.

Generally speaking, though, the more you can and are allowed to do yourself, the lower the cost of the overall job.
