Basement ledge

I need ideas on how to seal up a ledge in my unfinished basement. The basement wall is normal cinder block, but about 2 feel from top of the ceiling, the wall is recessed back about a foot, leaving a ledge. I really have no idea how to seal this up to create a complete wall. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Welcome to the forums! What are your plans to "create a complete wall". Are you studding up the interior for sheetrock? If you are leaving the block wall and offset as they are, you could lay in a pressure treated bottom plate, spf top plate and install short studs to bring the ledge out to the plane of the wall. Again, not sure what your plans are or why you need to bring the ledge area out. How tall is this ledge area?

Servicing a small attic after blown-in insulation

Last year we had cellulose blown into our attic. The space was small to begin with and the access to the attic located in the garage. The space immediately over the garage was big enough to squat in. Then travel from the main access to the kitchen one would have to crawl and almost lay flat to get past a low part of the roof. Then it would open up over the living room and family room (squat possibly stand). Then moving past those rooms to the bedrooms is similar as moving through the kitchen (crawl/lay flat). I didn't think I had anything to do in the attic at the time we had the insulation blown in, but now that more time has passed, I've been having ideas about running cables and installing a whole house fan, but can't imagine how I would do it when there is no way to get around the attic without moving the insulation around. The house originally had 4 inches of what I think was wool insulation. The company we hired added cellulose on top of what was in place to bring the value up to R39 I believe. Any recommendations on what to do, or do I simply need to go in there and move the cellulose around, do my work, and move it back into place?Read More

How much weight can my garage attic support?

Hello! Just moved into a different home and I'd like to use the space in the garage attic for some geneeral storage such as totes of clothes and shoes, seasonal items, etc.. I just finished laying some 1/2" thick plywood across the trusses, but as I was up there, I noticed the truss system is held together only by thoses spiked plates and I got a little worried that it wouldnt be safe to put storage up there. Its a typical 2x4 truss system; 24" on center and from floor to peak is only 3.5'. The span I would like to utilize is just over 7' and the ceiling underneath is finished with drywall. How in the world can I determine 1) if its safe to store stuff up there and 2) how much stuff I can store up there? So far, its held me (250 lbs) the six 8x4 plywood boards, an existing roll of insulation and a roll of leftover carpet. Its doing ok, I just want to make sure I dont over-do it. ThanksRead More
