Hiding piping in finished basement closet

Hi all,

I just bought a townhome and need help hiding some piping in finished basement closet. I've attached a picture. I'm not sure why they put carpeting around it, but can anyone offer advice on how to hide/cover up the piping? And shouldn't I add some type of floor cover so the dirt is hidden?

In my opinion you should not cover this in any way other then with something temporary like a curtain. I can't really tell if this is a sump pump (to remove water from the basement drain tile) or a ejector pump (for ejecting sewage). Easy way to find out is to run water in a basement bath or laundry tub and see if the pump starts. Anyway it should be left open do that it can be accessed later when the pump fails.

Attic fan installation questions

Hi all, I have read several posts (Chandler and Airman posted in them) debating attic fans versus turbines. I hate the idea of cutting holes in the roof which is why I am leaning away from turbines. Also, as my house has gable vents on both sides, I can move the air if I put a fan there. I'm ok with the cost of running the fans versus the savings I think I'll see from my AC running less. If the fan goes out, well, I'll fix it or else I'm back to where I started. I bet the $85 fan will pay for itself in two months in North Carolina. Installation: -I've read how people install them with rubber washers/bushings to cut vibration and I plan to do that. -I also read people installing them onto plywood and about making sure that outside air can't enter from immediately outside the fan shroud and just get blown out immediately. SO - for those people that install these on plywood, are they suggesting to cover 100% of the existing gable vent with plywood and cut the hole where the fan will be mounted? -Or, do people typically build a box, mount the fan on the box, and hang that in the center of the gable vent (and not worry that it doesn't cover the entire gable vent). -If my existing gable vent has screen on it, should I remove it and then put screen on the attic side of the fan once I've installed it? I'm thinking about how the fan might clog up the existing gable vent screen if I put the attic fan over it. Thanks, ChrisRead More

Crawl Space Access Hatch Through Floor Joist

I live in a 1950's ranch on a dirt crawlspace. The house's exterior walls are concrete block and there appears to be a main support beam running down the center of the house in the crawlspace with floor joists spanning between it and the exterior wall. I currently do not have access to the crawlspace and would like to for many reasons. My plan is to cut a hatch in a closet floor. The floor joists are 16" on center. I have been searching all over the internet and apoligize if this is redundant. I would like to cut a hole that would involve cutting through 1 floor joist making an opening approximately 32x32. I have read various things about how much, if any, reinforcement I would need to do to accomplish this safely. Do I need to sister the uncut joists their entire length? Do I need to sister them at all or can I just add a crosspiece between the uncut joists attached to the cut one, essentially framing the opening? Does the cross peice need to be doubled up?
