basement stair conversion

I have not been able to find this online, but I have an idea to convert basement into living space. Right now our cellar stairs are a straight shot off the hallway(typical ranch) ending up close to rear foundation wall. I would like to do an addition (10 x15) that would encompass the outside bulkhead and change it into open interior stairs with a landing and an exterior door at the landing. the additon would have a sunroom feel off the kitchen for the table and stairs. I would then use the old stair space to add an additional bathroom or 1/2 bath onto the hallway.

So what is the question to us? It reads as if you need to talk with some builders or maybe an architect at this point.

I guess I was just wondering if anyone had heard of that idea, as the bulkhead stairs are already wide, making that the main accsess, creating a landing at ground level and then continuing them up into an addition. yeah I need to talk to a builder, I have a frrling it might be an unusual idea.

People do things that others think is strange every day of the week. Whether or not your proposal would be strange is really a subjective question and would depend on whom you asked. I will say that if you have the new exterior wall only a few feet from the first step it would seem a bit odd to me.
