A small "storage" room in our basement has this strange wooden rigging alongside the walls. While some of the boards seem like they'd easily pop out, others are more stubborn. Boards that small can't be load bearing right?

Is it safe to remove all of it? I'd like to replace it with a cleaner shelving unit.

Bonus question: Should I be worried about these damaged blocks?:

If so, how easy is it to replace them?

That looks like the framing left behind from old shelves. None of it appears load bearing.

It looks like the block was damaged when the 2x's were attached. Possibly they used a powder activated fastener to shoot the wood on and it had too big of a charge used. Doesn't look like any major block damage.

When you pull out the old wood you may get more block crumbling.
