What is this and should I remove it?
When we bought the house the attic access over the garage and adjacent family room was sealed. I recently opened it and found some type of insulation board running down the middle of the attic space.
So, the blue insulation board spans about 3/4 of the entire length of the attic. On the other side is just more attic. Anyone know what it's doing there and should I just rip it out?
Also, the bat insulation is over the living space but stops about halfway where the garage (not heated) is. Is there any advantage to insulating the attic above the non heated garage?
Thanks for any help.

Attic spaces must be segregated from garage overhead spaces with solid framing and sheetrock and/or plywood with an access hole for ingress of fire personnel. In essence your division is questionable since insulation goes between the two. Is there a floor system on the attic portion of the house?

If nothing else, it's just helping to seal off the insulated attic space from the uninsulated attic space so that each can behave independently.

Thanks guys for your input. There is no separation between the attic above the living space and that above the garage. In fact, this solid insulation board runs perpendicular to the the line separating the two. That is what I find so puzzling about it. So, in the first picture everything in front of the camera is above the garage. Everything behind the camera is over living space. So that bat of yellow insulation is actually over the garage and on the other side of that blue/gray insulation board is more garage.
There is no floor just joists with drywall on the interior ceilings.

Ok, perhaps this picture will clarify what I'm trying to say. If (from the first picture I turn 90 degrees to the right) this is the view with the insulation board now being at my back. The yellow bat insulation is what's above the living space and the uninsulated portion above the garage.
