Basement ceiling/main floor sound insulation.

Hello everyone,

We have begun planning the layout of our basement and have not found a solution for the basement ceiling. The center of our basement is where the "theater" will be, and that is directly under the kitchen and family room.

I plan on putting a drop ceiling in there to keep access to pipes and what not.

The biggest concern is sound. Someone currently talking in the basement can be heard in the kitchen. Every footstep in the kitchen is audible in the basement. Our kitchen has bamboo hardwood flooring.

This is a photo of what our ceiling looks like, showing the materials the builder used, not this is not our house and a photo we found online.

I know part of the problem now is the sound gets trapped in the trusses so the ceiling alone will add a significant amount of sound dispersion. I'm just having a problem figuring what direction I actually need to go in.

Thanks
Charles

Cork is one of the cheapest sound reduction materials. However, it's not going to give you the quality of a music studio. Here's a 4 part article on sound proofing.
