What is this hole in the basement floor? 4" W x 12" D

Hello, wondering what the hole drilled approx. 12" deep through the basement floor is? There is a pipe in the bottom of the 4" hole that looks it has a valve on it. I think it's just earth around the pipe. The hole is located next to the water heater & heater. Name: Basement Hole.jpg

Welcome to the forums.

Interesting..... looks like some kind of cleanout. Hard to see what that item is in the center of the hole.

Yes, odd at best. Have you tried cleaning out around the threads and unscrewing the cap? It would be interesting if you could remove the cap and post a picture or two of the valve thingy on top.

seriously, is that a valve or air inlet for something ? excavate more to see if a pipe's under it then post more pics - thanks !

That fitting looks like a zerk(grease fitting) like you would see on a car but Im not sure what you would grease down there. Try to pump grease in there and see if anything works better ?
