Installing Sump Pit Basin

Good Day,

I am trying to install a sump pit and am going to have problems with the fill rolling back into the hole as I dig. The whole basement area sits on 2 to 3 inch stone that was used to fill the wetlands many years ago. Any ideas on holding back the rock while digging down?

Any thought or experience with type of installation would be greatly appreciated.

There isn't much you can do to keep gravel from falling into the hole. I would cut the hole in your concrete slab a couple inches larger than your pit. Dig your hole and place your pit. Then pour clean crushed stone around the perimeter to fill the void. You can use a broom handle or pry bar to try and shove as much as possible back under the slab. Fill the space around your pit with stonet up to the bottom of the existing slab. Then seal the gap around the pit with mortar or concrete if you've got a bigger gap.
