Unhappy

2 of my stairs leading to the basement collapsed. I tried to fix it best I could but now they are getting weak and one goes in further than the rest. On one side of the steps is a wall and the other side is nothing but railing. There is a door in the back on the wall side that leads under the stairs. Can someone help me fix them nice and sturdy , I have children who walk like herds of cows.

Putting backs on the steps will help. Take some wood and cut it so that it is as wide as the step and high enough to butt against the bottom of the step above and still be nailed (or better yet, screwed) to the back of the lower step. Doing this will support each step at the front, where most of the weight is. Make sure you put backs on at least the broken step, and the step BELOW the broke one.
