100 Yr. Old House - Stone Foundation - Can I Seal It?
#1

I have been told that stone foundations must breathe & therefore I should never seal it. I was also told that if I did seal it, that I would harm the foundation. I have met a couple of people who've sealed their stone foundations & it's worked nicely for them.
Everytime we have a heavy rain, we always get water through the foundation and I'd like to seal it if possible. Please feel free to lend me your 2 cents worth on this subject.
Thanks in advance!

The most common method of sealing stone walls is called Tuck Pointing. It is a slow tedious process, but it works really well. Alot of this is done on historical buildings.
You will need to read up on it. Library is the best source.

JACK SEALING A WALL FROM THE INSIDE IS NEGATIVE WATERPROOFING. THE OUTSIDE PRESSURE ESPECIALLY WITH STONE FOUNDATION WILL EVENTUALLY PUSH IT OFF. WATER WILL FIND PATH OF LEAST RESISTANCE.
WE USE A VAPOR BARRIER ON WALL WHICH FLOWS INTO A WATER GUARD DRAINAGE SYSTEM TO PUMP. SUMP WILL REMOVE PRESSURE UNDER FLOOR AND SERVE AS DRAINAGE COLLECTOR. VAPOR BARRIER CAN BE CONNECTED TO WATER GUARD UNDER FLOOR. MORTAR ON WALL, SUPER GLUES ETC.ONLY TEMP.
CONTACT A BASEMENT SYSTEMS DEALER IN YOUR AREA THEY WILL SHOW YOU.
