Vinyl Plank, Vapor Barrier?
Hello,
I am planning on redoing my basement floor. Currently it has checkerboard vinyl tile adhered directly to the concrete with a black, most likely asbestos filled, mastic. I purchased wood-look, floating, snap and click, vinyl planks from Lumber Liquidators. My question is, can the vinyl planks be installed directly over the vinyl tiles or should I lay down a 6 mil poly Vapor Barrier first? Any advice/input is appreciated. Thanks.

Have you had any moisture issues in the basement? I doubt you need a barrier for vinyl planks, but best to follow manufacturers instructions for below grade installation. If you have any gaps between tiles, uneven edges, dents or missing pieces in the existing tiles, they will eventually telegraph through the new planks, so those defects should be addressed first. Plank manufacturer should recommend a compatible patch/filler that can be used for that.

Here's the product I purchased:
4mm Black Mountain Maple Click Resilient Vinyl - Tranquility | Lumber Liquidators
I think there is a small installation manual in each box of planks but I haven't cracked then open yet. But I will definitely see if there is any recommendation included in there.
As far as moisture issues, we did have one trouble corner in the past, where we'd get a little water coming in after heavy rains. Realized it was a gutter/slope issue. We corrected those and used masonry waterproofing sealer on the offending wall for good measure. Knock on wood, we haven't seen water in a couple years

It says that an underlayment is optional and if you do use one, you need to use a specific underlayment as outlined in the installation instructions. The underlayment appears to be more for sound deadening and would in my opinion be worthless in a basement scenario.
