Installing storage in attic space

This is a roughly 15ft x 15 ft chunk of attic space over my first floor master bedroom. It is (newly) accessible from a 2nd floor bedroom via a 24"x80" door. The joists and rafters are 2x6" on 24 inch centers. [Ignore the insulation hanging down I stuffed a wad in turtle/mushroom vents while I was looking around]. House was built in 1999.

The idea is to move as much of this space as possible/reasonable from the outer envelope of the house to the inner envelope and have a new climate controlled storage space. Since we don't have basements here - this would be a Texas basement. I've got access to the heat/ac and air returns as you can see. I was thinking baffles and batts, then rigid foam. I think it'll improve the comfort of the master bedroom too.

What's got me stopped is the 2x6's framing. That seems undersized for the span (just over 15 feet) and it has a roof support? or something coming down into the middle of it. The joist under this contraption is two 2x6s sistered together but there is no wall under this. My bed is under this.

There is also a 2x6/2x4 combo "strongback" across the joists from wallplate to wallplate.

I'm taking this photo from an opening in the upstairs bedroom wall. I've also attached a pic of where the tray of the bedroom ceiling attaches to the exterior wall (also sideways!) I'm assuming this wall is framed this way because the upper wall is sided but the lower wall is bricked.




Do-able? Not Do-able? Or Do-able but not worth the effort/expense? Suggestions?

 

You are right that the 2x6 joists are undersized for the span and won't hold weight. I have been looking and question the direction of the joists in relation to the rafters. I have never seen this except in a hip roof situation.

You have minimal space, and not a good load factor, so I would not recommend using it for storage, especially if there is no support under this span.

 

That construction looks familiar. Is that a prefab house ?
