Question

I am considering buying a 81 year old house that has a full basement with NO egress/bilco door to the backyard. I am not sure of the make up of the basement wall, but I don't think it is block, if it is, it's covered with plaster or some other material. The basement is dry even after heavey rains. My questions are as follows:
1: Has anyone added a basement egress/bilco door to the backyard?
2: Cost involed to do the work?
3: Anything special I should ask a contractor, or products available?

Thanks for any help you could provide!

Just got done adding Egress exit and Bilco doors.... I have a 4 yr old home with 12 inch block.. I rented a cutting saw from Home depot for $60.. Located a dealer with prefab entryway system (goto Bilco.com) for more info... the cost of the prefab unit was $1600... $150 for the hole to be dug and a lil $$$ for some small cement work... $120 for 3ft steel door to open at bottom of steps into basement and your done.. Total was around $2000 but best $2000 I ever spent... A contractor will charge you $5000-7000 for this job, but if you have masonary expierience like I do its a snap... Good luck with it...
