Water in Basement
Hello -
I'm a new home owner and I've owned my house for a year. I have a section of my basement that is dirt with stone walls. I put plastic on the ground so that when I'm walking in that section my shoes/socks don't get dirty.
I haven't had water in the basement since I moved in (even in massive rain storms), but it recently stormed enough that there was a flood warning and the next day I had a quarter of an inch of water pooling on the plastic, which is not flush with the walls.
If the water came from the floor or walls, how did it go on the top of the plastic? Is that even possible? It's always been dry in that section.

I usually don't respond unless I have something positive to add but that does sound like a mystery. If the plastic doesn't go all the way to the walls then it wouldn't have come from there.
Was the water contained in a certain area on the plastic and what is above it ?
Water can follow strange paths.

Here are some photos. I thought maybe the water came in by the door (leads out to a Bilco door), but that section of the plastic was dry. It's just very strange as sections of the plastic nearest the walls were dry. There are plumbing pipes above, but there is no leakage that I'm aware of (I'm sure I would have noticed it after being in the house for 1 year and I go into that section of the basement daily).
Photos - Two dry photos were after I sucked up the water with a shop-vac and it dried out. Wet photo was of the day of the flood warning.

Waterproofing is done from the outside. Is there a high water table there? Is the ground sloped towards the house? Are the gutters & downspouts in good shape?
