How to ventilate small attic?

The original part of my house was a 1906 cottage with a peaked roof, asphalt shingles, 20 W x 14 L X 3 H. It has a 14" X 18" gable vent at the back but the intake is not sufficient. There are no soffits. There is a spot in the front where I could easily put in a small gable vent for air input. Maybe 1-2 square feet. That's far easier than ridge vents.

What's your view on using 2 gable vents with a straight shot between them over a short distance?

I am looking at using a solar exhaust fan at the back, and am concerned about air input.

Thanks

Ventilation serves different purposes in different climates. In a hot climate people look for cooling (actually they should be insulating and air sealing)
