Can someone describe how to texture a ceiling?

I've got a crack that runs down the center of my basement and every spring it allows a little seepage. the power went out and my sump pump couldn't work causing my finished basement to flood. I pulled up the carpet and in doing so it appeared to pull some adhesive stuff up with it and in some of those areas it's a little damp. The plan is to cut trenches around the walls and down the center of the floor and put indoor drain tile in and run all of this to the sump pump. What type of stone do I want to put around the drian tile pipe that will be covered with cement and will this stop the preasure from pushing water through my floor.
