Textured ceiling

Rent a texturizing rig at your local rental center. Use thinned down drywall mud, or buy special texturizing mud (premixed or powder). Practice on some scrap cardboard. The texturing gun has a nozzle with several size openings -- pick one you like.
Mask everything well (this makes one hell of a mess). Take down any ceiling fixtures. Shoot it on with a constantly moving texturizing gun, being careful not to leave a striped pattern. Do it as heavy or light as you like. Usually, you wait about 15 or 20 minutes and knock it down with a very light touch of a drywall knife held at a low angle (different people prefer different size knives -- I like a 12" knife).
This goes very quickly once you start. Do the walls at the same time if you like. Clean the rig before the mud hardens!
