Hi all, My first visit.

My house was built about 1816. The foundation is granite stones and has since been reinforced with concrete. There are 3 small windows in the foundation at ground level. The soil is held back from these windows with stones. First, I don't know if the windows served any purpose. Secondly, I'd like to remove the windows and repair the foundation properly with concerete so that soil can be filled in.

Can I remove the windows, place forms, and pour concrete?

Yes, you can do this if you want to, but these are there for ventilation. I would replace with new windows. Just a thought.

Cost for Adding a Basement

We are considering adding to our existing home. Someone suggested that we would get the most space for the money by adding a basement (the house is currently on a crawlspace). Can someone give me a very general, ballpark dollar figure for such an addition? THe home is a two story colonial with a crawlspace of approximately 25' x 40'. I would like to raise the house about one or two feet in the process and excavate (on an "ever so slightly" sloped lot) to allow for an outside entrance through a normal door. I would like the foundation walls to be poured, if possible, but block would be okk. I would like to everything necessary to ensure proper drainage (as in a new build). I would like to have the contractors leave the floors unfinished (for me to finish) but to go ahead and hang drywall. I also would like an inside entrance via stairs and "roughed in" plumbing for a future bathroom and wetbar. Any input would be appreciated. Read More

Sill plate repair

I have some minor damage in my Sill plate directly under my front door... I need to replace my front door and want to repair my sill plate first. The damage is about a 3ft length of a 2x10... about 1-3 inches into the wood... Do I repair it by replacing the entire board or do I cut out the bad and put in a 2x4 piece? Thanks, JRead More
