Unhappy

I recently purchased a home that is about 25 years old. In one of my bedrooms a very small sections of the floor gives under your weight and it makes a noise that sounds like sheet metal that does not have any support under it.(almost like a metal sponge). The floor is currently covered with carpeting. I am slowly putting together repair projects and I need some suggestions. The weak area is out of the way. (It's next to the bed where a nightstand would sit). This bedroom is located over another bedroom located in the lower level.

And exactly how does your basement fit into this picture?

Anyway, assuming you don't want to pull up your carpet, visit a home improvement center and ask for a special tool and screws designed to allow you to screw the subfloor to the joists through the carpet. The screw heads snap off after you screw the screws in.

The home is a tri-level. The other bedroom is located in the lower level which is the basement. I was unsure if the floor will give way under my weight or under the weight of an night table, if I chose to place one there. If it will hold up under the weight of a night table I won't consider messing with it until I'm ready to replace the carpeting.

Most likely the structural integrity of the floor is fine, and the sound is an annoyance only. Unless a plumbing leak rotted this subfloor, it seems unlikely that it won't hold your weight or the weight of a table.

Test the noisy spot. First step on it with one foot. Work your way up to jumping up and down on the weak spot. The excitement will be good for you, and you'll feel much better afterwards.
