Question

I'm finishing my basement to be a family/TV room. A gas stove is being installed for added heat. What's best for insulating the ceiling for noise and heatloss to the upper level? I've been told to use fiberglass w/ paper batting. I would think no batting would be preffered.

There are at least a dozen ways to do this, depending on how much sound and thermal separation you need. Fiberglass insulation is a simple, cheap, moderately effective product that may be a good compromise if you don't need something close to soundproofing. But skip the facing -- use unfaced fiberglass rolls.

The closest you'll come to soundproofing is to use special sound insulation, then use the resiliant aluminum channels that separate the drywall from the joists, and then hang 5/8" drywall from the channels (maybe even two layers).
