We have turned our attic space in to an office. The stairs come up through the floor. I want to install a nice wood banister around the hole in the floor. The floor has new carpeting on it. Should I install the banister over the carpeting or cut it away?

HELLO
If you are installing a banister around the hole if you install post at each end you can have a bottom rail that will not sit on the carped and give good suport for safty....Good Luckl

Drop down ladder for attic

My drop down ladder is currently located in my garage where I have an 11' ceiling height. The problem is that I have to use a 2' platform as a base for the ladder which takes up space and is a bear to handle. Should I attempt to extend the ladder length?Read More

Attic Span and Plywood Thickness

I have an unfinished attic which spans 17 feet to centerline. The joists are 2 x 8 nominal, 16 inch on center. I wish to put down plywood flooring for typical dead load loading (holiday decorations, off season clothing, etc). I have a few questions: 1) Do I need to "shorten" the span by "hanging" the joists to the rafters near the outside wall? 2) If so, how far do I shorten? a foot or two, etc? 3) If so, are 1 x 4's screwed in with deck screws to hang the joists adequate? 4) Once this is done, what is appropriate for flooring? OSB, plywood? and what thickness? Thanks.Read More
