I am looking into digging out my basement. I will be hiring someone for the job. It is currently a flat concrete floor, but the problem is that I can't stand up down there. I would probably want to dig out about 10-12 inches. The total size is about 500/sq ft. Does anyone have any idea how much this might cost. I am just looking for a ballpark figure. Also has anyone had this done and how long did it take.

Thanks,

Dave

Hire a neighborhood high school kid, and the costs shouldn't be too bad. Don't dig below your footers or your house may collapse (now that would be annoying). If you must dig below your footers, hire a structural engineer to tell you how far you must stay away from them (stay at least as far from the footers as the distance you will be going below them, but it will depend on soil type).

Digging out a basement

Thank you, John, for saying what I wanted to say but did not know how. Everything I read says don't mess with the anything that disturbs the foundation. It's like, "Don't mess with Mother Nature." If the house is sitting soundly, then why do anything to take a chance to disturb its foundation. Please know, John, I have learned so much from you and appreciate your knowledge and input.

Best regards,
