Drop Ceilings and Soffits

What is the usual/prefered way to hadle ducts, pipes, etc that are in the way when installing a drop ceiling? Should I build a soffit around the duct and drywall the soffit along with the walls, or do I build the soffit out of ceiling tiles?

The duct is at the edge of the room, so I will probably just build a soffit and drywall it so that it will blend in with the wall.

Soffits

Forum posters tend to recommend building the soffits. Don't forget to insulate your pipes. I once had a basement where someone didn't insulate the pipes. Condensation dripped and stained my ceiling.

Digging out a crawl space

I recently bought a house that has a fairly shallow crawl space - just enough for me to crawl in. I would love to have a basement and have thought about having one dug out. Anyone got any ideas on this? I have read some posts that talk about the possibility of collapsing your house if you try to do this. I would plan on using professionals but would still like some feedback before contacting a contractor. Thanks

Drop down ladder for attic

My drop down ladder is currently located in my garage where I have an 11' ceiling height. The problem is that I have to use a 2' platform as a base for the ladder which takes up space and is a bear to handle. Should I attempt to extend the ladder length?
