Need some rooms

Southern California girl is moving to upstate Wisconsin. Never even seen a basement till this summer. I have about 45 x 22 feet of heated basement and I want to add 2 bedrooms with closets. The Heater/Furnace and laundry are also downstairs. Cement walls and floor with beams overhead. I also have to add a inside staircase to get down there. The current half stair case is outside. There is a split bathroom but that's another story. What types of things do I need consider when making plans? Is this expensive to do? Help - Thanks MMA

Are you planning to do this work yourself, or hire it out?

To do it yourself will require acquiring skills in framing, ducting, electrical, plumbing, drywall, insulating, etc.

To hire it out will only require learning about your choices, and making sure you know how to get what you want clearly spelled out in a detailed contract. So you'll need to understand choices such as
  • drop ceiling vs. drywall ceiling
  • studs 24" on center vs. studs 16" on center
  • how many watts of power you want or need
  • how many coats of paint are enough
  • what kind of lighting you want
  • what your flooring choices are
  • how much insulation (thermal and sound) you want or need
  • different kinds of doors, windows, etc.
  • whether you want it wired for cable TV, Internet, networking, etc.
  • how to meet the egress window requirements for bedrooms.
  • what kind of bathroom you want, including type of tub, tile, sink, faucets, toilet, vanity, etc.
  • do you want a doorbell chime down there
  • do you want any built-in shelving
  • etc. etc.
