need egress window? - no bedromm
I've been thinking of adding a 12 X 16 exercise/den. It will not be a bedroom. It currently has 1 standard 1' x 2.5' window. Would I need to upgrade this to an egress window?

Call your Building Inspection Department for local code.
They can tell you exactly what is necessary there.

Make sure that you don't put anything in this room that could remotely be considered a closet. And it would also help if you didn't put a door on the room.
The bottom line is that this is up to the judgement of the inspector. If the inspector thinks that you are trying to camouflage a bedroom as an exercise room, he won't approve it. So design the room to be as unusable as a bedroom as you can.
OldGuy's advice to involve the inspector before you start is the best approach. That way he/she will be able to tell you what they will allow and not allow.
