garage roof insulation

Insulated and sheetrocked walls of moderate climate California garage with kraft back. Ready to do the roof insulation. Do I need to sheetrock it to be up to code? Is there a foil type (or other) insulation that can be left uncovered and meet code?

Insulation with FSK facing is not required to be covered with drywall. However its probably just as cheap material wise to use standard kraft batts and drywall. They get a premium for fsk faced material..

For instance an R-19 Kraft in this area goes for about 30 cents a sq ft. where as fsk is approx 60 cents per sq ft.

you probably wont find fsk faced material at any of your home depot type stores. You would want to try and find a Insualtion wholesaler in your area who suppliers the smaller building insulation contractors.

be sure you provide proper ventilation for the attic area If you plan on heating this garage.

Good Luck
Jim
